A day in the life my social media experience? Not a tough question to answer. Being the sports enthusiast that I am, a typical day in the life of my social media experience usually begins and ends by checking for updates to most Major American Sports – NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. My “likes” and “retweets” fall somewhere between sharing videos from games to forwarding along quips or comments from athletes. Following them and their “brand” actually builds upon my own brand as one who follows a certain individual.
I would say the sites I visit most often are Facebook and Twitter. My twitter account is where most of my sports fanaticism comes into play. Whether it’s checking up – to – the – minute sports rumors out there or following the players themselves, that is where my attention gets swayed.
For Facebook, this is where more of my personal brand is developed. This is created by my role as a Father and Husband. I share pictures of my children and / or share funny memes and GIFS with my wife during the day. I join certain groups on FB with which I share commonalities or interests. I “like” or “comment” on my newsfeed that will then, in turn, create more of my social media experience.
In both FB and Twitter land, we come across both positive and negative reactions. However, we can mold our exposure on these sites by eliminating the negative – it can be as simple as blocking someone with whom you feel are negative. Just like in life, you can choose who you wish to be surrounded by. Social media can be no different.
Everyone’s experience in social media is different than the rest. By creating our own brand, we are developing experiences online, and thus creating a profile for which marketers can determine whether the product or service they’re selling would be appealing to us. The social media experience is a two-way street between one’s own profile they are building for him or herself and the profile created for marketers. Subsequent emails from companies having to do with things I like on my newsfeed or view on Amazon is evidence of this. This is how digital media marketing is using our social media experiences to gain our attention and get us to buy their product.
“Oh, you liked this product, maybe you might like this one, too” and so on and so on. This was a genius concept developed and one in which marketers are taking full advantage. I see no harm in this, as we put ourselves out there to be viewed and profiled by them. We use social media for our purposes and so marketers will do the same.
